According to the FAO mutton sheep industry research report, since the 1990s, my country's mutton sheep production has maintained a rapid development momentum, and the number of mutton sheep in stock has remained at 280-300 million in recent years. The pastoral areas in my country are further subdivided as follows:
 
(1) Inner Mongolia: This region is one of the regions with the largest sheep stock in my country. In 2014, the stock was 84.429 million, accounting for 14% of the national stock.
 
(2) Pastoral areas in Xinjiang: Xinjiang is one of the five largest pastoral areas in my country. The grassland area in Xinjiang is about 57.333 million hectares, which provides a good material foundation for the development of sheep breeding. There are about 39-40 million sheep in Xinjiang, accounting for 13% of the total number of sheep in the country.
 
(3) Northwest pastoral area: Refers to the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia area, where there were 25.434 million sheep in stock in 2014, accounting for 9% of the total number of sheep in the country.
 
(4) North China agricultural area: the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, including the four provinces of Shandong, Shanxi, Hebei, and Henan, and the cities of Beijing and Tianjin. There are 67.274 million sheep in North China, accounting for 24% of the total number of sheep in the country.
 
(5) Pastoral areas in Northeast China: Including the three provinces in Northeast China, there were 19.544 million sheep on hand in 2014, accounting for 6.8% of the total number of sheep in the country.
 
(6) South-central agricultural area: refers to the vast agricultural area south of the Huaihe River in the Qinling Mountains except for the four southwestern provinces. There are 22.531 million sheep on hand, accounting for 8% of the total number of sheep in the country.
 
(7) Southwest agricultural area: including Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Chongqing City, there are 25.572 million sheep on hand, accounting for 9% of the total number of sheep in the country.
 
(8) Qinghai-Tibet Plateau: In 2014, there were 36.307 million sheep on hand, accounting for 13% of the total number of sheep in the country.
